Claude was born in Grandcamp above his parents' clothing store. He fondly recalls his childhood days when he worked tables during the regattas at his grandfather's cafe and general store on the Place de la Republique, now the home of his aunt. He has vivid memories of his former teachers, Marie-Therese Yver, Mme Dacier, and M. Bernieres who taught primary school in what is now the town hall.
His parents later moved to St Lo. He met Vivian, an American, at the University of Grenoble and the couple now live in the United States. They return to Grandcamp every year.
Vivian fell in love with the life and culture of Grandcamp's fishing port tied to the rhythms of the sea, which she has recorded in photographs over many years. She became fascinated by the history of the town under the German occupation and has interviewed a number of Grandcopais on their experience during that period. She documented and photographed the fortifications of the Atlantic Wall in Normandy in the early 90s. She considers herself a Grandcopaise by adoption.
