C'est Jean-Michel Cattelain, Président de l'Association du Torbouai qui nous l'envoie. L'Association entretient ce joli bateau, emblème de Grandcamp, entreprend les grosses réparations, participe aux manifestations nautiques régionales, et organise des croisières en mer dans la baie de Grandcamp, et jusqu'à St-Vaast-La-Hougue et les Iles St-Marcouf.

Depuis des années, Jean-Michel repertorie l'histoire, le patrimoine et les coutumes de Grandcamp, et publie régulièrement ses "Chroniques Grandcopaises" que vous pouvez acheter au chalet du Torbouai sur le port de Grandcamp.

Jean-Michel Cattelain, President of the Association du Torbouai shares this photograph of this majestic ship. The Association maintains la Grandcopaise, participates in naval festivals and organizes cruises in the bay of Grandcamp, and to St-Vaast-La-Hougue and the Iles St-Marcouf.

Jean-Michel has been documenting the history of Grandcamp for many years, and he publishes regularly his "Chroniques Grandcopaises", which you can buy at the chalet du Torbouai on the harbor.

La Grandcopaise a été restaurée par l'ASSOCIATION DES VIEUX GREEMENTS TORBOUAI DU BESSIN, comme réplique d'une "Barque Chalutière" de la période 1880-1910. Ce type de bateau de pêche était utilisé sur la côte Bas-Normande pour la pêche au large et près des côtes du sud de l'Angleterre, en baie de TORBAY.

Le navire fut conçu en 1934, mais n'a été construit qu'en 1949, à Cherbourg. Sous le nom de FRANCK-YANNICK, il fût en activité jusqu'en 1988, puis vendu comme bateau de plaisance. Après quelques travaux, le navire a été abandonné dans le port de GRANDCAMP où il a coulé.

Pour sauver ce bateau unique, l'ASSOCIATION DES VIEUX GREEMENTS TORBOUAI DU BESSIN a été créée en 1990. C'est alors que le bateau devint " La GRANDCOPAISE" et en 1993, la restauration était complète.

C'est justement sur le site du Tourbouai que nous avons trouvé cette petite phrase qui nous a inquiété: "Certaines difficultés de gestion des emplacements amènent à envisager de changer de port d'attache". Jean-Michel a précisé que le poste d'amarrage avait été repris "sans avis ni concertation". Il a ajouté:"J'ai envoyé des courriers à toutes les autorités mais sans réponse et nous avons récupéré la place du Colonel Rudder parce que celui ci cessait son activité. Sinon ?....".

Faut-il lancer une campagne pour garder La Grandcopaise à Grandcamp?

La Grandcopaise was restored by the ASSOCIATION DES VIEUX GREEMENTS TORBOUAI DU BESSIN as a replica of a typical fishing vessel of the 1880-1910 period. This type of fishing boat was used along the Normandy coast and off the English coast in the Bay of TORBAY.

Designed in 1934, the boat was built only after World War II, in 1949, in a Cherbourg boatyard. As the FRANCK-YANNICK, she sailed until 1988, when she was sold as a pleasure boat. Soon after, she was abandoned and sank in the harbor here in GRANDCAMP.

To save this unique boat, the ASSOCIATION DES VIEUX GREEMENTS TORBOUAI DU BESSIN was formed in 1990. In 1993, the restoration was complete. Renamed "La GRANDCOPAISE", it was certified fit to sail.

On the Torbouai website, Jean-Michel warns that the Grandcopaise has lost its rightful berth and may have to find a new home port. It has temporarily taken over the berth of the Colonel Rudder which is no longer in Grandcamp.

Manche: explosion à bord du chalutier "Manolie III" Explosion aboard trawler "Manolie III" (AP 20.09.2007 )

Nous avons trouvé ce bulletin d'AP aujourd'hui, qui nous a rappelé les périls auxquels les marins-pêcheurs font face tous les jours et au naufrage d'un chalutier de Grandcamp voilà quelque temps:

Un incendie suivi d'une explosion se sont produits à bord d'un chalutier basé à Barfleur, le "Manolie III", avec quatre membres d'équipage à bord jeudi matin.

Le CROSS-Jobourg a immédiatement coordonné les opérations de recherche et de sauvetage. Les moyens nautiques de la société nationale de sauvetage en mer (SNSM) de Saint-Vaast la Hougue (zodiac), de Grandcamp-Maisy (zodiac) et de Barfleur (canot tout temps) ont appareillé pour se rendre sur zone.

Les quatre membres d'équipage ont dû abandonner le "Manolie III" et embarquer dans le pneumatique de secours du chalutier. Ils ont été tous pris en charge, sains et saufs, par un autre chalutier, le "Cap à l'amont" , qui opérait à proximité.

We picked up this AP news story today and we were reminded of the many perils fishermen face everyday and of a similar accident that happened to a trawler from Grandcamp not too long ago:

A fire followed by an explosion occurred Thursday morning aboard a trawler from Barfleur, the "Manolie III", with a crew of four.
CROSS-Jobourg immediately organized search and rescue operations. The rescue teams from Saint-Vaast la Hougue, Grandcamp-Maisy and Barfleur rushed to the scene.
The four crew members had to abandon the "Manolie III" and climb onto the trawler's life boat . They were then taken aboard the "Cap à l'amont", which was fishing nearby.

Ce naufrage nous rappelle la mésaventure d'Eléonor Chardon, patron Grandcopais du Caprice des Mers:

Peu de temps après la Fête de la Mer, en 2000, une nuit, il remontait son chalut avec son matelot. Il était lourd, le chalut, ils avaient dû attraper quelque chose de gros! Le fond du chalut est sorti de l'eau, il a cogné le bateau.

Et puis l'explosion!

Eléonor s'est retrouvé sur le plancher de la cabine, et n'a eu que le temps d'attraper un gilet de sauvetage et de sauter à la mer. Le Caprice des Mers a coulé en quelques minutes. Eléonor et son matelot ont étés vite repêchés.

L'enquête a établi que l'engin etait une tête de torpille allemande, ce qui a permis à Eléonor de toucher l'assurance: En effet, les dégats causés par des engins alliés ne sont pas considérés comme actes de guerre! Depuis, son fils, Pierre, a pris la mer avec L'Hippocampe. Eléonor n'a jamais pu y retourner.

Il nous a raconté son histoire pendant qu'il nettoyait les belles soles toutes fraîches, que son fils avait pêchées la nuit même, et qu'on venait d'acheter à la Halle aux Poissons.

This story echoes the misfortune of Grandcopais Eleonor Chardon, captain and owner of the Caprice des Mers:

While fishing off the Normandy coast one night shortly after the Fete de la Mer in 2000, he and his mate were pulling up their net. It was heavier than usual. They had caught something big! As the bottom of the net surfaced, it hit the side of the boat. Suddenly there was a tremendous explosion. Eleonor was thrown flat on the floor of the cabin. He just had time to grab his life vest and jump into the sea. The Caprice des Mers sank in minutes. Fortunately, the two men were quickly rescued.

The investigation which followed found that the cause of the explosion was a German torpedo from WWII. Because of the finding of a German, that is, enemy, ordnance, Eleonor was able to receive compensation. Had the explosion been found to have been from an Allied weapon, the damage would not been considered an act of war and there would have been no compensation.

His son has taken over with L'Hippocampe. Eleonor has not been able to return to fishing.

Eleonor recounted this story while cleaning a beautiful sole freshly caught during the night by his son and that we had just bought for our dinner.
