Les Sauveteurs en Mer/Grandcamp's Coast Guard

Car c'est le grand-père de Pierrette, Alexandre Gibert, qu'on appelait le Père Biron, qui a commandé les canots de sauvetage de Grandcamp de 1889 à 1919. Il fut patron du premier canot, le Berthe-Madeleine, puis du Commandant Garreau qui le remplaça an 1894. Alexandre a été décoré de la croix de Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur pour ses services bénévoles.
Le fils d'Alexandre, Pierre Gibert, "Le Grand Biron", prit la relève de son père en 1919, et fut le patron du Commandant Garreau jusqu'en 1957, date à laquelle le canot a été remplacé par une vedette à moteur.
Etonnés de la longévité du service du Commandant Garreau, nous avons consulté les Chroniques Grandcopaises de Jean-Michel Cattelain. Jean-Michel y note qu' un seul autre canot de ce type a servi plus longtemps en France. Et il ajoute: "Il continuera d'ailleurs de naviguer après ce départ. Car il est racheté par l'école de voile des Glénans, où il sera connu sous le surnom de " Grande Chose " ! Finalement après encore plus de 25 années de navigation (en 1984) l'école l'offrira au Musée de la pêche de Concarneau. Restauré, remis dans son aspect de canot de sauvetage, il y est en exposition depuis 1987.Une retraite largement méritée."

Today's post picks up on the piece of Grandcamp's past introduced in our last post, the town's Coast Guard. We thank Pierrette Gibert for sharing with us many of the photographs on this Blog and for all those in this post. Pierrette's grandfather, Alexandre GIBERT, also known as le Père Biron commanded Grandcamp's first rescue boat, the Berthe-Madeleine from 1889 until the boat's retirement in 1894. Alexandre continued his service as captain of its replacement, the Commandant Garreau. For his volunteer service, he was awarded the Legion of Honor.

Alexandre's son, Pierre Gibert, nicknamed le Grand Biron, took over as captain when his father retired in 1919. Pierre is the father of Pierrette. In 1957, the Commandant Garreau was taken out of service and replaced by a modern cutter.

We were astounded by the length of service of the Commandant Garreau so we turned to Jean-Michel Cattelain, a local historian. In his Chroniques Grandcopaises, Jean-Michel notes that in all of France, only one other boat of this type remained in service longer. But even after leaving Grandcamp, the Commandant Garreau continued to sail at the national sailing school in Brittany and is now on exhibit in a maritime museum in Concarneau.
